Easy Crochet Stitch for Beginners: the Even Moss Stitch

Amanda Jane

This gorgeous textured stitch is a simple one-row repeat crochet pattern for blankets, scarves, afgans, cushions and more...

In this tutorial I use Aran weight yarn and a size 5mm crochet hook. Make sure you keep your tension on the loose side.

Simply crochet an even number of chains and start with a slip stitch in the 2nd chain from the hook. In the next stitch crochet a half double crochet (US terms). Repeat the slip stitch, HDC across the row ending with a slip stitch. Chain 1 and turn.

Repeat the pattern stacking the slip stitches on top of the slip stitches from the previous row and the HDCs on top of the HDCs from the previous row.
